The Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs has sacked the Chief Press Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Anietie Ekong, over the bad press the visit of their principal, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, received.
Although the Ministry denies this as the reason for his sack, the facts available show that the way the much talked about picture was leaked to the internet was termed irresponsible and so someone had to pay for it.
There were reports that the reason for the Tompolo visit by the Niger Delta minister was to lobby or pacify (better still, bribe) him following the seven-day ultimatum which the former had issued to the Federal Government to inaugurate a substantive board for NDDC or face a disruption of NDDC operations in the area.
However, things seemed not to go according to plan as there were leaked pictures of a huge ‘Ghana Must Go’ bag, purported to contain cash that was intended to help persuade the ex-militant to withdraw his ultimatum – which he eventually did – as the Minister entered the creeks.
To further substantiate the claim, Tompolo withdrew the seven-day ultimatum after the threat and also another picture that was taken when the Minister was leaving the creek showed that the ‘Ghana Must Go’ bag was ostensibly missing.
Following the backlash, Senator Godswill Akpabio is said to have been greatly embarrassed by the viral pictures and blamed his Press Secretary for the blip, especially because no official cameraman was allowed for the visit.
Consequently, Sir Etekamba Umoren, who is the Chief of Staff to Senator Godswill Akpabio, announced that Anietie Ekong has been relieved of his duties to be replaced by Mr. Jackson Udom, a seasoned Journalist and former editor with Tribune newspapers The appointment was ratified by the Minister.
A letter signed by Sir Umoren read:
“The Honourable Minister, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio, CON has appointed a former editor with Nigerian Tribune and Publisher, PeesReporters.com, Mr. Jackson Udom as his Chief Press Secretary (CPS) with effect from 8th June, 2021. Udom replaces, Mr. Anietie Ekong, who has been reassigned.”
