Militant Group, Niger Delta Avengers Make Fresh Demands; Presidency Responds

Niger Delta Avengers

The Niger Delta militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, has come out with a threat to sabotage economic activities in the region if their specific demands are not met. This is coming just days after the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari met with leaders of the Ijaw and Niger Delta region under the auspices of the Niger Delta and Ijaw National Congress (INC).

Why the Niger Delta Avengers chose the exact moment to make their threat is not known, however, they made it known that all the oil and gas exploration infrastructure in the region are not safe unless the federal government commits to the development of the region and the restructuring of the federation.

They made their demands known on Sunday, June 27, 2021, 48 hours after the INC met President Buhari at Presidential Villa on Friday, June 25, 2021. Part of the issues discussed at the meeting includes the inauguration of a Board for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and also finding out the position of the administration on the issue of restructuring.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina has come out to condemn the threat issued by the militant group, describing it as unnecessary. According to him, it was baffling that the Niger Delta Avengers would decide to threaten the nation at this time especially because the President just met with the Ijaw and Niger Delta region leaders and the meeting had addressed most of the demands the militants has put forward.

To buttress his point, Mr. Adesina published the full speech of President Muhammadu Buhari at the meeting with the Ijaw nation leaders which was held in the Presidential Villa on Friday, June 25, 2021.

“I warmly welcome all the Elders of the Niger Delta and particularly the National Executive of the Ijaw National Congress, under the leadership of Professor Benjamin Okaba. I thank you for paying this courtesy visit not too long after your election in April, and swearing-in last May.

“I also want to congratulate you all for your election and to add that a lot of responsibility is placed on your shoulders, especially coming from the fact that the Ijaw National Congress was almost without leadership for some time.

“As the symbol of the collective voice of the Ijaw people, which is one of Nigeria’s main ethnic groups, the existence of a focused and people oriented leadership would go a long way in articulating the demands of the Ijaw people and making sure these demands are made part of the national discourse.

“I particularly note your ten point demand to the Federal Government in your inaugural speech and assure you that this administration is frontally addressing them.

“I am equally concerned about the rate of environmental degradation in the Niger Delta and as you are aware the HydroCarbon Pollution Remediation Project has started work with remediation efforts in Ogoni land and I have directed the Minister of Environment to ensure that the projects are implemented with a high percentage of local content and inclusion of the surrounding communities.

“Similarly, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, under the same ministry of Environment is working to make sure that oil spills are reduced and new ones prevented. As you are also aware, all the responsible agencies of government have been directed to ensure that they enforce compliance by the International Oil Companies to international best practices.

“In addressing your call for immediate restructuring, the National Assembly whose responsibility it is to ensure that our constitution responds to the call for a restructured Nigeria, has already concluded regional consultations and as soon as they finalise the process, necessary action would not be delayed on my part.

“In the same vein, your call for creation of two additional states and more local government areas for the Ijaw people is a legislative matter, which should naturally be handled by the National Assembly and seeking concurrence at the state levels.

“I completely agree with your call to allocate operational licenses for marginal fields to Ijaw people. However, like you know, the process of granting licenses is guided by laid down rules and regulations, most of which even favour local content and local contractors. I see no reason why they should not be granted such licenses if they qualify.

“On the issue of fair and balanced appointments to reflect federal character principles, I re-affirm that this has always been my focus and would continue to be because I have always seen Nigeria as a country where everyone should be given equal opportunities.

“A contentious issue that has been a subject of discourse amongst the Ijaw people of recent has been the need for the Niger Delta Development Commission to live up to its billing by delivering the required succour to the people of the region. Based on the mismanagement that had previously be-devilled the NDDC, a forensic audit was set up and the result is expected by the end of July, 2021.

“I want to assure you that as soon as the forensic audit report is submitted and accepted, the NDDC Board would be inaugurated. However, I would like to implore you that the Ijaw National Congress should play a more active role in making sure that the mismanagement that occurred in the past is not repeated.

“I am particularly happy to note your call for promoting ownership of modular refineries by the Ijaw people and I will urge you to interphase with your sons who are involved in the processes of establishing these refineries, especially the Honourable Minister of State Petroleum Resources to actualize this quest.

“Like you well know, completion of the East-West Road is top on my infrastructure agenda and I will look to its speedy conclusion. Again, the occasional disturbance by youths in some communities along the route to construction work would require your close attention and guidance.

“Furthermore, we have made considerable progress with the construction of the Bonny to Port Harcourt Bridge.

“I am very happy with the recent affirmation of your belief in a United Nigeria and while I thank you for standing with me, I will also implore you to use your leverage in making sure that we keep working together to keep this country a united, indivisible entity, so that we can tackle our problems together and overcome our challenges together.

“I would like now to commend Professor Okaba for your emphasis on supporting the fight against insecurity by developing internal control mechanisms as well as working with other institutions in the country to address our current security challenges.

“While I thank you once more for this visit and I will continue to count on your support as we work towards resolving our current challenges.

“God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Fubara meets Tinubu in Aso Rock amid defection rumours

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, on Monday. Our correspondent sighted the governor walking towards the President’s office at 5:01 p.m., dressed in a deep-blue long-sleeve shirt, black trousers, and a black flat cap.

Minutes earlier, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, had been ushered in for a separate engagement. Details of both meetings remain undisclosed. Fubara’s visit comes amid speculation that he may defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress following political turbulence in Rivers State.

On December 5, 17 lawmakers loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike, led by the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, defected from the PDP to the APC, shifting the legislature’s balance of power. The only three lawmakers considered loyal to Fubara have not resumed sitting since the six-month emergency rule was lifted on September 18, deepening uncertainty about his political future.

Months earlier, Fubara had been reinstated as governor following the end of the emergency rule imposed by President Tinubu on March 18. Nwifuru, an APC governor and former Speaker of the Ebonyi House of Assembly, has also engaged the Presidency on infrastructure and security coordination in the South-East.

The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Benibo Anabraba, disclosed this at a news briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday. During a site inspection about two weeks ago, Fubara had said the Assembly complex along Moscow Road would be completed before the end of the year.

He said he intended to present the 2026 budget in the new complex, noting, “I strongly believe that before the end of December, this particular place should be set. Maybe when they come in, the other side of the complex will be handled by the Speaker himself. But this major work on the site, I will make sure it is ready for them, so that we will present our budget for 2026 in the main hallowed chambers, in the dignified manner that befits us.”

Anabraba reiterated that Fubara is committed to delivering democratic dividends to all citizens, assuring residents of safety and adherence to peace.

“From December 10 to 23, the projects to be commissioned and flagged off will cover Ahoada East and West, Ogba/E

ADC to Obi: Make up your mind now

The African Democratic Congress has asked the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, to make up his mind about joining the party.

The party said that although Obi was an important political leader needed in its coalition, it would not compel the former Anambra State governor to join.

Obi had, during an interview on YouTube with ‘Advocacy for Good Governance’ on Wednesday, stated that the ADC-led coalition was unstable due to some unresolved issues, including the zoning arrangement.

The presidential hopeful said he believed in the coalition despite being a member of the Labour Party, urging the ADC to settle some “fundamentals” necessary for a credible alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Despite his reservations, Obi expressed confidence in the quality of leaders driving the group, including former Senate President David Mark and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

When asked if he would stand by the coalition even if he did not emerge as its presidential candidate, Obi said he was not driven by personal ambition but by a desire for national progress.

But the Peter Obi Media Office said Obi never granted the interview. His media aide, Ibrahim Umar, in a statement on Friday, said Obi had confidence in the ADC. However, the spokesperson for the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, while speaking, said the party was not ready to toe Obi’s line of zoning.

He said the priority of the party was to convince Nigerians that it was a credible alternative.

“We’re not talking about zoning or no zoning now. Nigerians are still waiting for us to tell them what we will do differently. So, zoning or no zoning is not on the table now. If that is the condition for Obi to join us, maybe he should wait till that time.

“I understand what Peter has been saying. But I will encourage him to make up his mind if he wants to be part of the coalition or not. Because the most important thing for us is how we can convince Nigerians that we represent the credible alternative, and this is without prejudice to where the candidate will come from,” he said.

The ADC spokesperson said the party wanted Obi and encouraged him to be part of the coalition.

FG probes report of military aircraft grounded in Burkina Faso

The Federal Government has said it is looking into the matter following reports from Burkina Faso that a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft was forced to land in Bobo Dioulasso after allegedly violating the country’s airspace.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said officials were still gathering details.

“We are monitoring the situation and will issue a statement when we receive adequate information,” he told reporters.

It was earlier reported that the Government of Burkina Faso said a Nigerian Air Force aircraft carrying eleven soldiers was forced to land in the country on Monday after reportedly violating its airspace.

The incident occurred on Monday and was first reported by the Agence d’Information du Burkina, which published a statement from the Confederation of Sahel States.

According to the statement, the aircraft, carrying two crew members and nine soldiers, made an emergency landing while operating in Burkinabe airspace.

The statement added that an investigation by Burkinabe authorities “highlighted the absence of authorisation to fly over the territory of Burkina Faso for this military device.”

“The Confederation of Sahel States informs the public that a C-130 aircraft belonging to the Air Force of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was forced to land today, December 8, 2025, in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, following an in-flight emergency while operating in Burkinabe airspace.

“The military aircraft had two (2) crew members and nine (9) passengers on board, all military personnel,” the Sahel regional body said.

Authorities in Burkina Faso later stated that an investigation “highlighted the absence of authorisation to fly over the territory of Burkina Faso for this military device.”

The Confederation condemned the development as a breach of sovereignty, saying it “condemns with the utmost firmness this violation of its airspace and the sovereignty of its member States.”

It further warned that its air and anti-aircraft units had been placed on maximum alert and “were authorised to neutralise any aircraft that would violate the Confederate space.”
