Nigerians may yet have another restriction forced on them as the National Assembly (NASS) has been charged to make the necessary laws that would regulate and control the birth rate across the country.
If the NASS heeds this call, it would mean that in the coming days, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, just like the Peoples Republic of China, will place restrictions on the number of children a family can give birth to.
According to the Director-General of Bureau Public Procurement (BPP), Mamman Amadu, who made this submission, laws should be introduced that would control the birth rate in the country right now with a bid to checking population explosion in the country.
He based his analysis on the fast rate with which the country’s population has grown since its independence – 60 years ago.
“Our country is young. Just 60 years old and we must do everything to make sure we deliver so that this country can grow and meet the rest of the world. Apart from that, you all know that about the time of our independence, we were about 59 million, today we are about 200 million.
“We must prepare to take care of all these people that we are producing and possibly maybe you will use your legislative powers to reduce the number of children a couple have.”
It will be recalled that a similar call was made by the dethroned Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi in 2017 when he called for the control of the birth rate in Nigeria, especially, in the Northern part of the country.
He said that while pointing to the fact that most states in the north were suffering from abject poverty, especially when compared to other parts of the country.
Sanusi stressed that:
“If they should continue with such productivity, about 40 percent extremely poor people will be in Nigeria. Poverty in the South-West is 20 percent; in the North, it is 80 percent, Lagos is eight percent and Zamfara is 91 percent.
“We have been talking about Almajri for over 30 years. Why are people having a family that they cannot maintain? Why are people marrying wives that they cannot maintain? The condition is that you can provide for your family.
“Instead of having many children, why not have the ones you can cater for? These are the fundamental questions we should ask ourselves. Most of these children roaming about the streets will be adults in the next 20 years and they will be the ones recruited as political thugs by the politicians if we don’t take good care of them now.
“This is my advice that we must look at. These are not religious issues, they are social issues that need to be addressed. We will not work to divide Nigeria. We should not take an arm, don’t be provoked by any utterances. Be law-abiding wherever you are.”
