There have been speculations that the erstwhile Commander of the Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, has been on suspension since July 31, 2021, following his indictment by the US Intelligence unit, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have been secretly recalled.
It was said that the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba had recalled the embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Abba Kyari to the force without much ceremony, much to the disdain of those following the developments. This report had caused an uproar among Nigerians with some suggesting that the Federal Government has been selective in its anti-corruption campaign as it only targets perceived enemies.
However, police authorities have come out to debunk the claim, insisting that there is no truth whatsoever in the speculation and Mr Abba Kyari is still under investigation.
The Spokesperson for the police, Commissioner Frank Mba dismissed the report, saying;
“How can the police recall an officer suspended by the Police Service Commission?”
It should be recalled the Abba Kyari, who is a well-known police officer was suspended from the Police Force in July 2021, following revelations of his involvement with the suspected Internet fraudster, Abbas Ramon, commonly known as Hushpuppi.
The FBI had demanded his extradition to the United States where he would face charges for allegedly defrauding a Qatari businessman of funds to the tune of $1.1 million alongside Hushpuppi.
When questioned about what the police is doing about the allegation levelled on Kyari and what happens with extradition notice from the US, the IGP told State House correspondent in Abuja that the police had but received a formal extradition request but has investigated the allegations levelled Abba Kyari and submitted its findings to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Attorney General of the Federation for advice.
The IGP said:
“I have not received any extradition request formally. But I have read from other places that there was an extradition request. I’ve not seen it and that is one.
“Two, when this issue of Kyari started, we took our own action by constituting a panel to look at the allegations that were made against the senior officer.
“The allegations were based on fraternising with Hushpuppi and even receiving some series of instructions on extrajudicial torture and so on. We looked into all these allegations via the committee set up by the DIG and we submitted our report to the SGF on the findings of our investigation.
“We just received the legal advice from the office of the Attorney General on what to do next in terms of asking the officer to account for what we have gathered in the course of our investigation.”
