The World Health Organization has selected Nigeria among 6 African countries to begin the production of Covid-19 vaccines in the continent.
WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus made this known on Friday, the 18th in his statement at a ceremony hosted by the European Council in Brussels, Germany.
Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, Senegal South Africa, and Tunisia were selected as the first recipients of technology from the WHO’s global mRNA vaccine hub. This is in an effort to boost Africa’s ability to make her own COVID-19 vaccine as well as create vaccines to combat other diseases plaguing the continent such as malaria and tuberculosis.
The health body assured that it would work with the government and companies in each of the countries to develop a roadmap for training and production, based on their needs and capacities.
The global mRNA technology transfer hub was established in 2021 to support manufacturers in low-and-middle-income countries to produce their own vaccines, ensuring that they have all the necessary operating procedures and know-how to manufacture mRNA vaccines at scale and according to international standards.
South Africa’s Afrigen has already begun production of its own mRNA vaccine with clinical trials to begin in the 4th quarter of 2022 and its approval slated for 2024.
