Singer Timi Dakolo surfaced atop the trending list on Twitter Nigeria when clips of him performing at an event for Atiku Abubakar’s declaration to run for presidency in the forthcoming 2023 elections surfaced.
The said clip was shared on the microblogging platform by the official Twitter handle of Atiku Abubakar, after which mixed reactions followed.
“The Unity song by Timi Dakolo. One People. One Future. One Country. #OneNigeria #AtikuDeclaration,” the former Vice President wrote alongside the 15-second clip.

Mixed reactions soon trailed the post, notably, one Olaulu called out the ace musician in a post made to his Instagram page, with the handle, @olaolu_thaniel.
“…They have started singing in political rallies ohhh @timidakolo is live at Abuja international conference center singing and endorsing DPD’s Atiku. Let it be known that @timidakolo endorsed Atiku,” the user wrote on his Instagram page.
Timi soon responded, defending his actions, he replied, “I will sing and collect bread my Guy, if it pains you well well, go sing your own ?”

Also criticizing Timi Dakolo was Twitter personality Dr. Dípò Awójídé (with the handle @OgbeniDipo) who wrote on his Twitter page; “Timi Dakolo for Atiku. K1 for Tinubu. Game on. Maybe M.I will play for Osinbajo and Fashola and Don Jazzy and his crew for Fayemi ☺️”

However, one user replied Dipo’s tweet with a screenshot of his Tweet made in 2015 where he endorsed Buhari for President, insinuating that Nigeria would be better for it. Dipo’s 2015 tweet is often referenced whenever he criticizes other people’s political stance.

Some Nigerians seemed to find nothing wrong with Dakolo’s #AtikuDeclaration gig. One Twitter user with the handle @ManLikeIcey wrote;
“I don’t see the problem with Timi Dakolo singing at Atiku’s Presidential declaration, he’s a celebrity and he’s doing his work. Only becomes a problem if a celebrity has constantly been dragging a politician and eventually sings or campaign for him, then that’s hypocrisy.”
Many Nigerians on Timi Dakolo’s side are of the reasoning that Timi’s performance at the event is not equal to endorsing Atiku for presidency.
A few days ago, Super Eagles legend and Pastor Taribo West was heavily criticized for praying for the success of Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the forthcoming polls. West alongside other retired Super Eagles players had visited the APC Chieftain at his Bourdilon mansion for an early celebration of his 70th birthday which will be marked on the 29th of March.
