The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced on Thursday that it has uncovered a plot by mischief-makers to target car owners, landlords, and smartphone users during the planned Protest set for next month.
“Already, we have detected some unscrupulous elements determined to hijack the planned protest and turn it violent. Many are therefore following in ignorance,” stated Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, during a press briefing in Abuja.
He added, “There are indications that if you own a smartphone, a car, a shop, a house, or even use air conditioning in your home, you have been marked as a target.”
General Buba cautioned against any form of violence during the upcoming nationwide demonstration, noting that the protest organizers aim to replicate a recent protest-turned-anarchy in Kenya. While acknowledging citizens’ rights to express their grievances, he emphasized that the military will not tolerate any violent gatherings or protests.
The police have also issued warnings against violent protests next month.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu, governors, and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have urged Nigerians to cancel the planned ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest slated for next month.
The protest, aimed at highlighting economic hardships, has gained significant traction on social media and is scheduled to take place across all states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in August. The protest organisers remain anonymous.
In recent months, food and basic commodity prices have skyrocketed, as Nigerians face one of the country’s worst inflation and economic crises, driven by the government’s policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.
