The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has urged Nigerians to ensure that they link up their Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) with their National Identity Number (NIN) before the final deadline set by the Federal Government – October 31, 2021 – or they will have to blame themselves when the consequences set in.
This was reiterated as the Commission spoke during the NCC Digital Signature (NDS) radio programme in Lagos where they discussed the benefits of NIN-SIM integration. Speaking during the programme, the Director of Public Affairs at the Commission, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde encouraged citizens who use mobile phones to ensure they get their NIN and link it to their SIMs.
“Soon, people without NIN will be denied of necessary services that play vital roles in their lives including acquisition of driver’s license, international passport.”
On the importance of getting the NIN, the Regional Director, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Funmi Opesanwo, stated that the exercise is very important as it will help the improving the security situation in the country.

She noted that with the NIN, network providers will have a means of verifying an individual’s identity and safeguarding both identity and mobile line.
“For instance, Bank Verification Number (BVN) is being harmonized with NIMC database. Therefore, BVN holders have automatically been allocated NIN and we advise BVN holders to dial *346# with the mobile number linked to BVN to confirm their integration. However, NINs generated via BVN must be verified and validated by NIMC through proper registration and biometrics capture at an enrollment center.”
Meanwhile, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has revealed that the Commission is working hard to ensure that the 140 million Nigerians who are yet to enroll for the National Identity Number (NIN) do so within the stipulated time.
In the past year, the NIMC revealed that about 22 million NIN have been added to the previous 42 million NINs, to increase the figure of those who have linked their NIN with their SIM to 64 million. The Director-General of NIMC, Aliyu Aziz, disclosed this at a webinar organized by the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) with the theme: “Citizen’s Identity Management in a Digital Economy.”
