Amid rumors that she is pregnant, the First Lady of the nation Aisha Buhari has asked all staff working with her to proceed on indefinite leave.
She made this known in a statement posted to Instagram by her verified Instagram handle @aishambuhari and signed by Dr. Mohammed Kamal, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Office of the First Lady on Health and Development Partners.
In the statement, the First Lady of the country asked her staff to close for work for the year and that every other work needed to be done be carried out virtually.
“This serves to inform all staff that the office of the First lady will be closed for the upcoming festive period of Christmas and New Year,” the statement read.
“To this end, all staff are requested to proceed on leave, until further notice. Please note that official engagements and work can also continue virtually as it was done previously.
“Her Excellency appreciates and thanks all staff for their commitment and hard work and wishes all a happy festive period ahead.”
The first lady’s statement seemed to have been pulled down from her page a few hours after it was posted.
This new development comes a few days after the first lady’s return from her trip to Turkey alongside her husband President Muhammadu Buhari.
Photos taken of the first lady at the airport showed her with a rather strange protruding belly, to which Nigerians began to speculate that maybe she could be with child.

In one of the photos, Aisha Buhari wore a yellow lace kaftan and had a black shawl draped over what appeared to be a baby bump with her hand cradling it.
A media aide to the first lady, Sulaiman Haruna would later debunk the rumors. An anonymous presidential source revealed to the media that the first lady was not pregnant but was instead down with an ailment, which has been suspected to be cancer. The source said that the drugs the first lady is using for treatment had caused her to gain a lot of weight, hence the pregnant look.
“She’s not pregnant. She’s treating an undisclosed disease which is believed to be cancer. The drugs she’s taking had caused her to gain weight,” said the source.
This would not be the first time the first lady was relieving her staff of duties. Back in 2020 following her return from a trip abroad, the first lady ordered one of her top aides to go into self-isolation.
