The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC Adamu Abdullahi has moved to prevent the further defection of his party senators to other political parties ahead of the 2023 general elections.
About 10 APC Senators have already dumped the ruling party and moved to other political parties with another 22 seeking to follow suit within the coming weeks. The defections threaten the APC’s majority in the upper house and according to the national chairman Adamu can also hamper their success at the forthcoming general elections.
In a move to pacify the aggrieved senators, Adamu had a meeting with them on Wednesday afternoon at the national assembly. According to Punch, Adamu asked each of the aggrieved senators to table their grievances one after the other, after which he asked them to put them in writing for further steps to be carried out in their favour.
Adamu spoke to the media after the meeting where he said that the meeting was a fruitful one. However, he expressed worry over the mass defections and said that it was an unfortunate occurrence.
“The meeting with the senators was most fruitful. The issue of defection is an unfortunate development when it happens but this is a season where there are all sorts of behavior in the political space and ours is not an exception, Adamu said.
He further added;
“In every election year, this kind of thing gives cause for stakeholders to sneeze and Nigeria is not an exception so is the APC, not an exception. I don’t care about what is happening in other parties, my focus is on the APC. But we all know that the occurrence is not only happening in the APC, it’s happening across other political parties too. And because we are the ruling party, our problems are exaggerated before the public. There is no responsible leader that would not be worried when he loses one member not to talk of two.”

While he seemed positive about the meeting with the senators, Adamu admitted the uncertainties that come with politics saying that he was not sure of what the next day could bring.
“At the moment we are faced with the stark reality of our problems. I have committed my colleagues at the National Assembly to face the problem squarely and see the problem as solvable. We are in politics, I don’t know what would happen tomorrow, and nobody does,” Adamu added.
Since last week about 10 APC senators have defected for various reasons including losing the primaries in their bid for a return, as well as the inter-party crisis caused by the meddling of their state governors. The 10 former APC Senators are now part of either the PDP, Peter Obi’s LP, as well as Kwankwaso’s NNPC.
